Thanks to our Green Sponsor Stonyfield, Urban Epic Boston has pledged to make the 2009 Urban Epic Boston the “Greenest Large-City Triathlon on the East Coast.”

Stonyfield is working with Athletes for a Fit Planet, the leading environmental consulting firm, to implement a number of sustainable initiatives as part of our Pledge of Sustainability. Here’s what we’re doing…

  1. 100% online registration to save paper
  2. Eco-friendly race T-shirt from Greenlayer
  3. Utilizing Zipcars for pace vehicles
  4. Providing goodie bags from City Sports that are reusable
  5. Making recycling and composting available at the race
  6. Providing organic and local foods from groups like Chipotle Mexican Grill, Stonyfield, Cabot Cheese and others.
  7. Offering FitPlanet Green Tags so you can voluntarily offset your carbon emissions (See below)
  8. Promoting free ride sharing option with PickupPal to lower our carbon footprint (see below)
  9. Printing all race materials on post-consumer recycled paper
  10. Giving out water bottles made from biodegradeable and compostable materials at finish from local bottler Native Waters
  11. Providing Green portable toilets that use earth friendly non-toxic chemicals provided by Dave’s Eco-Friendly Toliets
  12. Using non-polluting staff vehicles (bikes) provided by Urban AdvenTours

Look for the Stonyfield Recycling signs at the start and finish area where we are recycling and composting plus we’ll be recycling and composting all along the course.

Go Green with Stonyfield and Athletes for a Fit Planet!

Free Ride Sharing with PickupPal

Why drive alone? Share a ride to the race – we will help reduce emissions and traffic congestion; and you will probably meet some cool athletes. Urban Epic has teamed up with PickupPal to offer triathletes the chance to either offer or ask for a ride – all for free. Click on the PickupPal logo below and check it out.

Now you have the opportunity to off-set your travel to-and-from the race!

Athletes for a Fit Planet has teamed up with NativeEnergy to offer Green Tags. Each Green Tag cost $2.50 (tax included) and can be purchased as part of your online registration or at the FitPlanet booth on race day. Each Green Tag offsets 300 pounds of CO2 or about 300 miles of driving. You will receive an actual sticker you can wear on your bib to show your commitment to sustainability. For information about carbon offsets and how they work visit FitPlanet and NativeEnergy.
The Fine Print
Each FitPlanet/NativeEnergy Green Tag you buy will offset an estimated 300 lbs of CO2 through NativeEnergy, based on the expected lifetime carbon offset output of a new Renewable Energy, GHG Reduction, or Energy Efficiency Project the Green Tag helps build, or the current year output of a project the Green Tag supports. All Green Tag carbon offsets are donated to Clean Air-Cool Planet for retirement.  Learn more at www.nativeenergy.com.
