The Zone Urban Epic is managed by Tri-Maine Productions, an event management company based in Portland. Tri-Maine also organizes the popular Lobsterman Triathlon, as well as a number of other races in New England.
Swim Course
The 2009 Swim Course is totally different than ever before. To maximize safety, excitement, and spectator participation, we have put both the start and finish of the swim at East End Beach. It will be a counter-clockwise course that follows buoys off shore. The tide will be just past high, with very little current. Total distance = 1/2 mile

Mini-Transition
After finishing the swim, you will stop at the mini-TA to pick up your shoes for the half-mile run to the main-TA at 58 Fore Street. You'll have to carry or wear your wetsuit, but don't worry, it's all flat!
Bike Course
The 2009 Bike Course will be new and improved. Leave Transition, take a right up to Eastern Prom, then a left onto Walnut. Climb up over the hill, then head down the other side, crossing Washington and continuing on Fox. At the bottom of Fox, go right onto Franklin Arterial, then left onto Marginal Way. Take right onto Preble, then right onto Baxter Blvd. Stay on Baxter until you reach the 1st turnaround point just before Bates Street. Head back on Baxter until you reach the 2nd turnaround point at the intersection of Preble. Head back down Baxter to the 3rd turnaround point (same as the 1st). Return on Baxter, and proceed past the turnaround point onto Preble. Follow the same course back to the Transition Area.
Total mileage = 13 miles

Run Course
The 2009 Run Course is shorter than years past, but just as challenging. Start down the East End Path, then take a left at Cutter Street and head up the Eastern Prom. At the top of the epic hillclimb, go right (staying on the sidewalk) and run all the way to the Vietnam memorial (corner of Eastern Prom and North St). Turnaround at the memorial and head back down the sidewalk. At tennis courts, go left and follow the trail (unpaved) until it meets up with the East End Path. Take a right onto the Path, and follow it all the way to the finish on the Maine State Pier. Total Mileage = 3.7 miles.

The Transition Area
The Main Transition Area will be situated at one of the most unique locales imaginable - inside a boat-building warehouse. All gear and bikes will be entirely protected from weather.

Field Limited to 600.
Awards
Top 3 M+F overall, top 3 in each age group - starting with U19, and
going every 5 years up to 80+. Finisher Awards will be presented
to every athlete who completes the Triathlon.

Finish and Apres
One of the most exciting parts of the 2009 Zone Urban Epic is that it will be finishing on the Maine State Pier, one of the most spectacular venues in the country. Not only will you cross the line in the heart of the Old Port, but you will find yourself in the midst of a party! Celebrate your accomplishment by joining your friends, family and fellow competitors at “APRES EPIC," the best post-race shindig you’ll enjoy all year. With food, massage, vendors, demonstrations, music, beer, a kids race, and much more, what else could you ask for? Spread the word – the festival and music are free to the public and will continue well past the end of the race!
