The Urban Epic is managed by Tri-Maine Productions, an event management company based in Portland. Tri-Maine also organizes the popular Lobsterman Triathlon, as well as the Urban Epic Boston Triathlon.
Pre-Race Registration and Packet Pickup:
Athletes will be required to attend packet pick-up. This is available at the following times:

Thursday July 8th from 5pm to 6:30pm at Gorham Bike and Ski in Portland. (click here for directions)

Friday July 9th from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm inside the Transition Area at 58 Fore Street.

Athletes who sign in on Thursday or Friday will be allowed to rack their bike on Friday, July 9th between 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm. The Transition is located inside a weather-proof warehouse that will be monitored by security through the night. It is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that athletes rack their bikes on Friday, due to the limited parking near the venue on race morning.

Saturday, July 10th from 6:00am to 7:30am at the Transition Area.

For those of you new to the world of tri, Balance Multisport will be holding a free beginner’s clinic on July 9 – the eve of Urban Epic Portland – for anyone interested. You’ve done the hard work training, now it’s time to enjoy the race. This short clinic will go over tips and techniques you can use to make your race great. Topics will vary and will include:

Setting up your transition area.
The swim start – where to place yourself and tips to a relaxed swim.
Moving from swim to bike to run.
Race day nutrition.
Specific course tips for Urban Epic.
The clinic will begin after registration at approximately 6:30 p.m. inside the Transition Area at 58 Fore Street. No need to RSVP, just bring your questions! Ideas for a discussion topic? Post it on the Balance Multisport wall.
Any further questions can be directed to Olivia Lord via www.balancemultisport.weebly.com

Every participant must show proof of identity and sign the appropriate waivers. There is no parking at the race venue on Saturday morning. There will be shuttles running from the designated parking lots throughout the day for athletes and spectators, as outlined in the athlete guide. All athletes will be bodymarked and pick up their chips on Saturday, July 10th between 6:00am and 8:00am at 58 Fore Street. A shuttle will be available from the Transition Area to the Swim Start starting at 7:45 am; however, most athletes walk the 6/10 of a mile along the bike path to the start and leave their sandals or shoes in their mini-TA bags.

There is a mandatory pre-race meeting at 8:15 am at East End Beach with the Race Director. Relay members who are doing the bike or run can attend a race meeting at the Transition Area, also happening at 8:15 am.

Swim Course
The 2010 Swim Course is similar to 2009, except that it will include a turn buoy near the start, perpendicular to the beach. Athletes will swim directly out to this buoy and turn 90 degrees, keeping it to their right. They will then swim to the next buoy and go around by keeping it on the left. The rest of the swim will be a counter-clockwise course that follows buoys off shore. The tide will be just past high, with very little current. Total distance = 1/2 mile

Mini-Transition
After finishing the swim, you will stop at the mini-TA to pick up your shoes for the half-mile run to the main-TA at 58 Fore Street. You’ll have to carry or wear your wetsuit, but don’t worry, it’s all flat!

Bike Course
The 2010 Bike Course will be very similar to last year. Leave Transition, take a right up to Eastern Prom, then a left onto Washington Ave. Take a right onto Fox and at the bottom of the hill, go right onto Franklin Arterial, then left onto Marginal Way. Take right onto Preble, then right onto Baxter Blvd. Stay on Baxter until you reach the 1st turnaround point just before Bates Street. Head back on Baxter until you reach the 2nd turnaround point at the intersection of Preble. Head back down Baxter to the 3rd turnaround point (same as the 1st). Return on Baxter, and proceed past the turnaround point onto Preble. Follow the same course back to the Transition Area, except go straight across Washington Ave at the top of Fox onto Walnut. Go over the hill and down the other side, before taking a right onto Eastern Prom, and heading back toward Transition.

Total mileage = 13 miles

Run Course
The 2010 Run Course is the same as last year. Start down the East End Path, then take a left at Cutter Street and head up the Eastern Prom. At the top of the epic hillclimb, go right (staying on the sidewalk) and run all the way to the Loring memorial (corner of Eastern Prom and North St). Turnaround at the memorial and head back down the sidewalk. Take a left onto the new Portland Trails path that leads through woods down to the East End Path. Take a right onto the Path, and follow it all the way to the finish on the Maine State Pier. Total Mileage = 3.5 miles.

The Transition Area
The Main Transition Area will be situated at one of the most unique locales imaginable – inside a boat-building warehouse. All gear and bikes will be entirely protected from weather.

Awards
Top 3 M+F overall, top 3 in each age group – starting with U19, and going every 5 years up to 80+. Finisher Awards will be presented to every athlete who completes the Triathlon.

Finish and Apres
One of the most exciting parts of the 2010 Urban Epic is that it will be finishing on the Maine State Pier, one of the most spectacular venues in the country. Not only will you cross the line in the heart of the Old Port, but you will find yourself in the midst of a party! Celebrate your accomplishment by joining your friends, family and fellow competitors. With food, massage, vendors, demonstrations, music, and beer, what else could you ask for? Spread the word – the festival and music are free to the public and will continue well past the end of the race!
